I take it you mean John Fox Burgoyne Royal Engineer, Retreat to Corruna, Peninsula War, War of 1812, versus Dom Miguel 1826, Crimean War? I have lectured on engineers in the Peninsula, but there are so many interesting soldiers, both British and Portuguese, who served there that I would probably take up a year of Substack devoted to them alone!
I was thinking of 'Gentleman Johnny' Burgoyne, who came to grief at Saratoga. He served, as a brigadier general, under Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe, who, in 1762, led the defense of Portugal against a Spanish invasion. That said, I'd love to know more about the younger Burgoyne as well.
The Peninsular engineer was the illegitimate son of Gentleman Johnny by his mistress Susan Caulfield, an opera singer. Johnny did not, apparently, begin that liaison until after his wife (daughter of Lord Derby) had died. There were another four children by Johnny out of Susan.

Looking forward to the chaser of this lesson. One of my beloveds was in Portugal for New Years this year as well. A happy connection!
Conte-nos a história do conde de Lippe e do general de brigada Burgoyne, por favor.
